The 2008 DNC Rules & Bylaws

Fannie Lou Hamer, the 1964 DNC heroine.

I don’t care how old folks get or how many degrees we earn or how many kids we raise, some of us still act like children on the playground! If the game ain’t being played the way you think it should be played, pull the rules book out of your hip pocket and show everybody where you are correct. But, if you know you can’t, shut-up, get out of the way and let the game continue!

I’m probably not saying anything new here, but it’s good to reiterate an important principal: before you play the game, understand the rules, especially, if you had a hand in developing the rules. If all the players/candidates understand the rules that govern this process, why did we go through the exercise?

The 2008 Democratic National Committee Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting took place, almost, in my backyard. I was going to walk over there to the hotel and check it out, but after the rain and all of the Hillary/Florida supporters clogging the sidewalks, I decided to just watch it on CSPAN.

The 2008 Democratic primaries are unlike the pre-1964 Democratic primaries that intimidated black folks and other minorities with the imposition of illegal taxes and tests. No, b.s. like that didn’t take place because every Democratic candidate and delegate from every strata of this party had a say in developing these rules. I’ll be damned if the likes of Everett Ward and Donna Brazile will allow fairness to be abrogated in this process during these primaries because they remember their mommas and Fannie Lou Hamer.

Harold Ickes, you can take Hillary’s cause to the DNC Convention and wage your floor fight if you like, but just remember that you’ll be doing it at the expense of destroying what most of us want and I’ll remind you, again: to go to the convention in unity and defeat the Republican Party in the fall! And while you’re thinking on that, remind your peeps that if unity is not their objective, they stand to have Roe v. Wade challenged, pro-choice obliterated and an imbalance on the Supreme Court for at least two generations to come!

Can you see them?

I refer to my piece from 23MAY, “Mrs. Clinton, Mrs, Clinton…” where I stress the point of irresponsible and often flipped remarks about doing harm to political candidates, or to anyone for that matter, can be a license to the maladjusted members of this society to act.

By Mrs. Clinton (Mrs. Clinton because I’m still pissed) throwing the RFK “A” word inference out there, the vile “dumbditz” are making light of this very serious issue. Case in point: Just yesterday, in responding to a question about her take on Clinton’s RFK inference on FOX, Liz Trotta, the former New York bureau chief of The Washington Times and a dumbdit for FOX News Channel, flubbed the usage of “Osama” and “Obama”. And in her effort to be clever about Clinton’s use of the “A” word inference, Trotta mumbled something to the effect, “or both if they could”. Decide for yourself

Folks, it’s all about money and ratings! If you have a better explanation for this wanton disregard for one of our greatest gifts to the world, I’m open to hear it.

Mrs. Clinton, Mrs. Clinton, what the hell were you thinking???????

To suggest that Senator Obama could be shot, is that how bad you want the presidency? Old stupid me, I expected this type of talk to come from the David Dukes of the world. We have forgiven you so many times in the past, but with this, you have crossed that unforgivable line. What respect I held for you has been dwindling day by day…..I am now depleted.

Mrs. Clinton I’m referring to you as Mrs. Clinton because I am pissed! You've just set the atmosphere for all the crazies in this country to do what they do best, be crazy! “Come on out fellas, make headlines for your stupid ass selves. And when you’re done, I’ll invite you to the White House to sleep in the Lincoln bedroom when I become your president!” Today, you became the best example of what Senator Obama wants to change in the country.

Folks, in my last blog, I just suggested a Presidential Aptitude Test which was inspired by the show, Survivor. I described the agility, cunning, deceitful and hateful things that those contestants did to one another in order to win. Was I right on the money?

Senator from New York, you’ve just ignited the fears, again, of many black folks who would love to see Senator Obama become the first black president of these disunited states. And in all fairness, I am going to include the media and the Lee Atwaters/Karl Roves of the world in my disdain for what has happen, too. Mrs. Clinton couldn't stoke these fears all by herself. Contrary to popular belief, there are blacks that did not vote for Barack, not because you were a better candidate…nah. They did not vote for him because he is the best that we have to offer America and they do not want to see him destroyed. And what you did today, intentionally or unintentionally, Mrs. Clinton, what you did brought out our worst fears.

I don’t think anyone will settle for your choice of phrasing as a fuax pas, a mental slip. No, you’re too intelligent for that. Remember, you’re the candidate that will be ready on day-one to address whatever challenge America will face. God forbid, if something awful, as you implied did happen to Senator Obama, this country will never be the same.
Would your conscious be ready for that on day-one, Mrs. Clinton?

How smart is your candidate?

A friend sent this cartoon to me which became the muse for this blog….thx, Barb!

The caption under the cartoon is, obviously, too small to see. It says, “I keep thinking we should include something in the Constitution in case the people elect a [freaking] moron".

Being in the trades, I’m required to take test and become licensed and insured before I can get my grubby hands on anything. It’s all about liability. If I screw-up (and I would have to screw up, royally) my liability is not insurmountable.

But, if I were president and I screwed up, losing hundreds of thousand lives and destroying futures, what insurance will cover my blunder? What test did I take to assure the American electorate that I have the quantifiable wherewithal to handle the job? What we do is put our multi-millionaire presidential candidates through an endurance gauntlet of stump speeches, town hall roll-up-your-shirt-sleeves meetings, substantively empty debates, Sunday morning “sound-bite” opportunity shows, bad regional food, bowling-for-votes and chugging shots at local watering holes.

The other night, I was channel surfing and I ran across these scantily clad women, so I stopped. It was the internationally-watched, Survivor. That’s right…I watched it. I thought that this show was an excellent metaphor of what politicians must do in order to get elected. After watching these hot chicks go through tests of nerve, agility, cunning, manipulation, deceit and all of the other disgusting things that they had to do, the light came on, da daaaah!….The Presidential Aptitude Test. Yeah, a P.A.T. Imagine our multimillionaire candidates being given a, let’s say….real world test. The P.A.T. would be broken down into two parts: a written test and a practical test.

Are you smarter than a fifth-grader?

What do we really know about their knowledge of basic government facts, e.g. the branches of government, the constitution, the bill of rights? Can you be pulled over and asked where you’re from just because you’re middle eastern looking and your name is Hussein? These are basic facts that all candidates for citizenship must know. But, do presidential candidates know them? Do our presidential candidates know America’s historical allies? Do they know where these countries are on the globe? Can they name the heads of state? My intent is not to be facetious, but to ask valid questions….ok, I’m lying. But, come on, after the last seven years, I think my questions are valid.

We all assume that our candidates are knowledgeable and capable, but, are they? They have wonderful personalities and great teeth. But, the U.S. no longer has the luxury of thinking that we don’t need to learn a second language because everyone speaks English and if they don’t, they better learn, uh? or appreciate customs and mores of other cultures because it’s all about us, right?

The Written Test

Should our candidates have to sit down at a table (a proctor sitting in front of them with her glasses sitting on the tip of her nose and a stop watch in her hand) and take an examination to test their “presidential knowledge base” like we have to do when we want to be a doctor, lawyer or a carpenter?

Do they know the difference between Shiites and Sunis, Hutus and Tutsis? Can they, intelligently, breakdown the economy, “macro-ly” and “micro-ly”, to us little folk so that we can understand why in hell we're getting gouged at the fuel pump? We’ll find out if they know how to pump their own gas in the practical test.

Now, the real fun – The Practical Test

Imagine this- Our candidates will be the head of a household, in the hood with three kids and one facing college, next year. Each candidate will have a household annual income of $65,000. To make ends meet, the candidate joins the army reserves hmmm.....should we deploy the candidates? The rent is $2,000 a month and the roof leaks. The family car is a Ford Taurus with 150,000 miles. The candidates will have a union factory job and a boss from India. Got the picture?

Now, let’s see how well the candidates meet the family needs. Like most parents, the candidate will go to PTA meetings, especially this time because his daughter’s teacher called and said it is important to be there this time. On Saturday, everyone piles in the Taurus to go shopping at Sam’s Club, knowing that the food budget is going to be less because food has gone up. That night, the candidate and spouse are home watching reruns of Good Times because they cut back the cable in order to get ready for baby girl going to college, next year.

On Sundays, the candidates attend church regularly because the rigors of “regular” working people’s day-to-day lives can be overwhelming and they find that they need to hear something inspirational that will get them through the week. Church starts promptly at 11:00am and the liberation theological pastor’s text, this week, is taken from Hebrews, Call forth those things that be not, as though they were. Faith…just keep on, keeping on! “lawdy, lawdy lawdy….I just don’t know how we’re going to make it!” You see, the candidates can’t remember the last time that their personal checking account balance was less than $30,000, if it ever got that low. In that case, the bank would automatically transfer additional funds. Can’t wait to get that stimulus check!

We’ve come down to the final month of the practical test and there are only two candidates left well, I’ll be… One candidate dropped out after he understood that his savings would be drained before Medicaid would kick-in to take care of his 80 year old mother who has Alzheimer’s. Another candidate dropped out under stress from having to live in a neighborhood where he heard gun shots and after calling the police, no one showed up. ‘It’s not worth dying for!’ The final candidate simply said that he wanted to make sure his daughter got in college, but he didn’t have to take orders from his idiot boss anymore and that he needed to go back to India. Well, I guess he told him!

The drama is building because the nation is down to its last two democratic candidates in the practical testing phase. The media is in frenzy. Each major network sent their junior reporters to the candidates’ homes because rookies always go to the most dangerous area to report. We have Sen. Beverly Benson, D-NY, upper middle-class white suburbanite, Yale Law School grad and we have Sen. Abdul-Haqq Khoury, D-Il, first generation American, lower middle-class black man, urbanite, Harvard Law grad. Sounds like history in the making!

The Benson Household

“The conditions of this test are nothing new to me. I have friends that live this way every day: they get-up early and make breakfast for their families, and then they go to work where they work hard all day. My friends come home in the evening, tired; they make supper and help their kids with their homework.” The exasperated senator from New York continues, “I can relate to these people, excuse me, ‘sweetheart, don’t worry about the dishes tonight. The maid will be in tomorrow morning’. Oh, I guess you weren’t supposed to hear that. ‘Just kidding, the detergent is under the sink, darling. I’ll be right there after this interview.’”

The Khoury Household

“Look, I’m forty-six years old and I just got finished paying off a student loan. It’s just recently that I’ve experienced how good other people have had it. I didn’t start making any money ‘til I came to the U.S. Senate. My work as a community organizer didn't pay very well. Hell, if it weren't for my wife, I’m not sure how we would have made it. This practical test we’re going through was my life, uh, it’s better than my life, growing up. I’ve been here before; I got the T-shirt to prove it! By the way, we’re about to have dinner. We’re having baked beans and hot dogs, care to join us?”

Epilogue

Well folks, you get the idea. I interjected a little satire, but my point is to bring attention to real issues of the day and not dwell on decoys or petty issues that are designed only to distract. The decisions we make today affects the whole world. Therefore, it seems ludicrous to allow ourselves to get caught up on lapel pins, name-calling or what others may say, incorrectly, on the candidates' behalf when we have to select someone who is going to make life and death decisions.

Our scrutiny of candidates on real issues will discourage the “manufactured” candidate from coming on the scene, again. Manufactured? These are the shell of a person who are filled with special-interests' money, special-interests' dreams and aspirations. They act and respond by remote control. The manufactured candidate has no capacity to think and reason and they have been known to malfunction.

Microbrother, do you mean the Manchurian Candidate? Whatever…I’m talking about Bush, o.k?

The Hold-out or Hold-up?

Why is Hillary “really” holding-out?

I was talking to my boy, “E” (his claim to fame was being on the same side of Julius "Dr. J" Irving in a pick-up game at U-Mass) and the conversation was on the hottest subject in the country:

She ain’t stupid. She knows she ain’t goin’ to win and her campaign is in debt.
O.k., so, what do you think it is? What about a supreme court seat?
Not sure. Well, we know she needs to get out of debt and I think, maybe she’s trying to position herself for a shot at the oval office in 2012. I think the court would be too restrictive for her personality.
I'm listening!
Remember when she spear-headed her universal health plan and she got trounced?
Yeah?
Well, maybe she’s trying to garner enough delegates through these final primaries to create a position from which to bargain with the DNC and the Obama campaign. While at the same time, by continuing her run, she proves to her base that she's a kick-ass fighter to the bitter end.
O.k., I’m wich ya?
She'll get a one-on-one sit-down with the O-man that would, probably, go down something like this:

“O.k. O-man, you’re in a better position for the nomination than I am. But, if you screw this opportunity up, I'll be on your narrow behind like white-on-rice! You’re goin’ to get your ass kicked in the general election without our unified support….”
“Talk to me, baby girl. What's on your mind?”
“O-man, you adopt my universal health plan!”
“That's it?”
“Of course not. Nominate my recommendation for Secretary of Health and Human Services, to implement my plan. I want you to lobby your ass off to make sure "SHE's" confirmed. I want you to have a rose garden ceremony for the ratification where you will, publicly, acknowledge my leadership role in bringing this legislation to pass.”
“Is that it?”
“No…chill. I want you to appear with me for several fundraising events so that I can get this damn campaign debt off my shoulders. That fool out in 'Tinseltown', Peter Paul & Mary, whatever his name, is getting on my last nerve."
“Hmmm, I’ll think about it”
“While ya at it, think about this, too: I got the 'yeehas' in Texas. I got the 'lunch-bucket' factory workers and 'dirt farmers' in Ohio. I got the 'wannabe-Americans' in Cali. I got those, 'blue-collar, moonshine running miners' in the West Virginian hollas and Kentucky. I got the 'gun tottin', bowling-for-votes' Pennsylvanians in the mill that ain’t going to budge ‘til they hear from the ‘Hill’….think on that, my brotha!”
“I see….settin’ yourself up for a 2012 run, uh?”
“It ain't over 'til the lady in the pants suit says it's over. Have a nice day, Mr. Presumptive Democratic Presidential Nominee.”

Tough chick, ain’t she?
Let's shoot some hoops!

It's her day

I congratulate Senator Clinton on her victory in the Keystone State. She won this battle, but Obama will win the war!

Will somebody help me understand?

“Senator, why won’t you wear an American flag pin? I question your patriotism”.

WILL SOMEBODY HELP ME!

I can’t believe how people can be old and still be S.O.S., stuck-on-stupid! There has to be an awareness vacuum in this country. You know what I mean…...like, little pockets in this country where different types of information can’t penetrate, where people can’t get new information and discuss contrary points of view.

Charlie Gibson and George Stephanapoulos should be embarassed of themselves.

And what in hell does a button have to do with this man’s willingness to put his life on the line to salvage what remains in the aftermath of Gordon Gekko-like greed and self-interest of the multi-national oil companies and the military/industrial complex?

PLEASE, SOMEBODY HELP ME, NOW!

Ok, ok, ok….I’m going to chill because I must continue to remind myself that what we are witnessing are the Lee Atwater/Karl Rove playbook tactics at play, designed to distract and bog down Obama so that he can not deal with the real issues. BUT, just one last stab: don’t these people know that their ignorant questions are being recorded for posterity and will be aired over and over ad nauseam?

I can’t help thinking about Jackie Robinson and what he had to go through as the first black in major league baseball. O-man may not have been the right candidate twenty years ago . Nor do I think he may be the right man twenty years from now, but he is the right brother, today. It takes the patience of Job and the skill of a surgeon to put up with the asinine tactics we see being played out on a daily bases.

However, I continue to question both democratic candidates’ position on pulling troops out of Iraq in the time-frames they suggested. Having some experience in the military, I remain pessimistic on that note. Also, they both fell in the same trap that Bush-1 fell into, remember: “Read my lips: NO NEW TAXES”

Come on, O-man! I love you, but that was a naive statement then (a la Bush-1) and it’s a naive statement now. It only bolsters the enemies’ point about you not having the experience required. I understand that things are said on the stump to appease the masses….ok, fine. But, things change. The situation on the ground may require a different strategy once you’re in office. You are only limiting yourself when you make commitments like that, and by the way, you didn’t look comfortable when you made those statements. If you can’t deliver by getting the troops out on your time-frame and/or you can’t affect change in the budget and have to raise taxes, well……..

Unfathomable Possibilities

It has become apparent to me that the O-man is the most dangerous man to the maniacal right-wing members of this society and they will do whatever is necessary to destroy the credibility of the senator. By the same token, they will go just as far to tarnish Senator Clinton.

After reading a recent email from another Obama supporter, sharing the video about the Peter Paul scandal, criticizing the Clintons, I considered the unfathomable possibility of O-man being derailed by the Lee Atwaters and Karl Roves of the world.

With Clinton in the “kitchen sink attack” mode, the nomination determination is coming down to the king-making decision of the super delegates. Should it stand to reason that we must be extremely careful of the criticisms leveled against the democratic candidates? If Clinton does become the nominee, the caustic tactics of the radical right-wing can destroy Obama supporters’ inclination to support Clinton in the general election.

For this reason, I believe that all criticism should be carefully vetted before we makeup our minds about any candidate because the alternative could destroy the Democratic Party and any redemption of America on the world stage.

The Second Coming?

During the New Hampshire 2008 primary, I felt compelled to travel to Columbia, S.C. to support my presidential candidate of choice, Senator Barack Obama. Upon arriving at the campaign office, I was pleasantly surprised to see so many young people working there. It was a rainbow of humanity in that building. The Latino giving me instructions could have been my youngest son. After returning home, I talked to others who had volunteered in Obama’s campaign offices throughout the country and it was unanimous: all agreed that it was an exhilarating and inspirational experience that we wanted to share with others.

I left South Carolina feeling that those young people won’t be strapped with the luggage that my generation and previous generations have been carrying around for so many years and that the future of the country seemed brighter.

After Obama’s speech on race, I needed a few days to decompress because I was quite aware that I had just witnessed history in the making. The junior senator from Illinois’ speech will be recorded in the annals as one of the boldest speeches ever delivered during a presidential campaign.

We all know that thirty-two minutes is not enough time to exhaust this sensitive issue, but I think the senator used his time wisely. As a black baby boomer, it is easy for me to understand the importance of the black pastor in my life and to respect liberation theology that brought us from whence we come. Yes, this theology can be brutally honest and compassionate, providing the sustenance for our survival as people. Black preachers are famous for telling it like it is. You can experience every emotion humanly possible during a two-hour service. A black preacher can make you laugh. A black preacher can make you cry. A black preacher can make you question why you even came to church that Sunday morning because you left feeling abused. Typically, you weren’t personally being abused. It just so happened that you were guilty and felt the sting! Regardless of the range of emotions you experienced, there was one thing you were guaranteed….you were given basic instructions that you needed before leaving this earth….you were given love. Just like a parent, uh?

My father was my pastor and I did not agree with everything he said as my pastor and as my father. What person accepts everything anyone says? But, I would be damned to denounce him under pressure from those who neither understand my pastor’s theology, character nor the goodness of his heart. What I find so ironic about this effort by the anti-Obamanians is that the Clintons' pastor supports Pastor Wright.
Doesn't that beat all!

I can remember one day, many years ago, a white coworker shared her unsolicited opinion of Minister Louis Farrahkan with me. I soon realized that she did not think very highly of him. I remember thinking that I was not surprised by her sentiments. My coworker, immediately after sharing her thoughts on the minister, asked what I thought of him. I was taken aback because I was in an office environment and her voice carried far. Suddenly, the silence became deafening. All of the office chatter had ceased. All of the clicking of keyboards came to a halt. Being one of a few black folks there, everyone waited with bated breath to hear my reply. This was my “E.F. Hutton” moment. This was my day of reckoning! Never a member of the Nation of Islam, I did draw strength from the charismatic and fiery leader’s words. I felt compelled to defend the minister against this attack or, at least, express another side of his popularity with young black men like me.

There were only two options I could take:

1. denounce the minister as some wild-eyed bigot that had no place in civilized society and reside in my tiny office cubicle free of white backlash, but guilt ridden for the rest of my life, or….

2. tell that woman that the minister is a proud black man that embodies the backbone of strength, integrity and intelligence that I only wished I could claim

Well, I chose the latter. From that day on, I felt so isolated and uncomfortable in my place of work. For this reason, I sat on the edge of my seat and watched Senator Obama talk about his pastor, Jeremiah Wright, with tears in my eyes because I know the courage it takes to speak the truth about your feelings and convictions. I felt the same way when Mohammed Ali refused to be drafted into the army. I’m sure that both men knew the risk that they were taking, but they “man-up” in spite of the potential cost to their hopes, aspirations and careers. To open a discussion on race in a highly contested political campaign in America can be suicidal. But, Obama did. You may not like how he did it, but he did it. And he did it with such clarity and honesty that no one in the deepest recess of their hearts can say that the senator was wrong.

You know, all my life, I heard the good folks in church talk about “the second coming”.
This is the time when Jesus Christ is supposed to return to earth. Like everyone else, I thought, “sure, but not in my life time”. I’m sure that this may be a stretch to most, but I’m going to go out on a limb, today: Could Barack Obama be the embodiment of the second coming? Let’s think about this for a moment: if you were God and you see the state of this world you created and you wanted to lead this country in straightening out the mess that man has created, AGAIN. How would you present the second coming?

As God, you would know that the world is in a position to self-destruct at any moment. You would know that the world’s wealth is in the hands of a few. You would also know that the children you created equal are not being treated equally. So, how would your children recognize the second coming? Would you want the second coming to have the best education that can be offered? Would you want him to have impeccable intelligence, strength, courage, compassion and patience, laced with a bit of human flaw to demonstrate his humility? Would you want the second coming be a peacemaker of good counsel? Would you want your emissary of love to have the ability to bring your children of different hues and persuasions together, promoting brotherly love for one another and to be better stewards of the earth you created? I trust as God, you would want all of these things.

It remains, what would the second coming look like? Would this person be black or white, brown or yellow or would this person be a mixture of all of us, engendering collegiality among warring groups? What would your representative sound like? Perhaps his voice would be soothing and reassuring to the ear and his words uplifting to the spirit. Should he be short or tall? Perhaps tall so that he could be a beacon for your lost children? Would the second coming be old or young? Not too young because you would want him to be taken seriously. Not too old because it will take so much stamina to do your will.

What religion would God’s emissary profess? O.k., that’s easy, but he must be knowledgeable and respectful of all beliefs.

The American political process has been thrown a curve ball by Obama. Never before has this system been confronted with such issues and is being forced to contend with them. Our state of the union is in need of a strong dose of Castor oil. As a nation, we can not go down the same road wishing that we can continue to enjoy all the benefits and privileges of the past at the expense of the least of us. I believe the “Obama Movement – The People’s Movement” is blazing a new path for us that is considering all that is important to America and the world community for our common survival.

I envision a successful President Barack Obama commissioning an elite delegation of well respected individuals from various communities in American life, e.g. educators, medical professionals, scientists, scholars, labor, agriculture, clergies and youth with the mission of visiting different countries where relations have been strained. This “Goodwill Tour” would be about the business of making amends with those countries that we have slighted and disrespected over the last decade. This group can visit not only those countries that have our national interest, but those countries that have no national interest to us. I envisioned this because I am reminded of a lesson my mother taught me when I was very young. She said, “Son, you should speak to everyone, regardless of their station in life, because the same people you see on the way up can be the same people you see on your way down”.

Who is to say that America will maintain its world-power status forever? History says otherwise. I can remember when anything that had “made in Japan” or “made in China” was considered inferior and undesirable. I dare say we can find ten things in our home that boast “made in America”, today. This country has become a debtor nation. It stands to reason that we do not have a monopoly on wanting to be the biggest and the best in the world, earning the exclusive right of claiming to be the only super power on the planet. Our neighbors in the world community have aspirations of a better life, as well. Just imagine how much could be accomplished on behalf of this planet we live on and its citizens if we could respect our international neighbors and treat them as we would want to be treated.

I have lived long enough to realize that if people can sit down to talk and just keep talking, that most of our problems can be solved. No matter what we do, we can not bring back lives lost in war. For those bellicose politicians and members of the military/industrial complex who are hell-bent on making money and war at every opportunity, I am curious to know if these hawks have ever been involved in armed struggle. Have they ever had some blood-spattered soldier die in their arms or explained to grief-stricken parents that their only child was killed by an I.E.D.? Some years ago, there was a commercial on television showing two old men in a valley with fists flailing, slugging it out while the people they represented stood on opposite hills observing the disgusting spectacle. If our leaders feel that strongly about making war, I would like to invite them or their children into the valley to have at it.

Just keep talking, there is an answer!

Barack Obama is by no means, singularly, the end-all solution to all of today’s problems. I see him as the spark plug to initiate structural change in the way government policies are developed, practiced and carried out. Politics is, by nature, a rough and tough game. Given this fact, one would think that it is necessary to portray a veneer of steel and possess the ability to crush your enemies like killing insects with Sherman tanks. I can’t imagine the hatred and resentment I would feel toward Americans/American policy if my loved-one was abused the way those Iraqi men were treated at Abu Ghraib.

Today, we have an opportunity to make, perhaps, the biggest difference in world history since the formation of the United Nations. John F. Kennedy implored us, some forty-seven years ago, to ask not what our country can do for us, but what can we do for our country. I’ll take it one step further by asking, “What can we do for the world?” We need to seize this opportunity with this young man’s, Barack Obama, vision to become the next President of the United States of America to begin the process of ensuring the survival of us all!

Society's morals vs. human nature

Lt. Governor David Patterson (D-NY) may soon become the first black governor of the Empire State as a result of Governor Eliot Spitzer’s philandering with a known prostitute.

Historically, men (especially, powerful men) have gone this route, in spite of all of their wisdom. It begs the question: what makes us men vulnerable to the allure of sexy distractions? I think it’s the way we are wired in order to insure the viability of the human race. You have to question why the male species risk their lives to not miss the opportunity to copulate. Have you ever seen the number of dead deer laying on the side of the road during mating season?

If you asked Gov. Spitzer why he did it, he probably couldn’t give you an intelligent answer, just like Billy Clinton couldn’t. Right or wrong, it’s just the way the male species is wired. All that modern man can do to satisfy societal limitations is to try, vigorously, finding sexual satisfaction within accepted institutions. With fifty percent divorce rates, this is a challenge.

Pharmaceuticals came up with Viagra that unnaturally enhances men’s abilities, perhaps they can come up with a blue pill that can reduce philandering. We castrated stallions and bulls so that they can be more controllable. Can you imagine a society of metrosexual men?
….just a thought

Clinton vs. Obama: Let's look at the record

Uncle microbro,

I know you love this stuff as much as I do. The Managing Partner at my firm knows I have been closely following politics and forwarded this email to me. I am not sure of the original source, but the information looks accurate. I will be confirming more of it when I get a break, but most of it from first glance is pretty factual. I wonder why no one from their camp is using this as ammunition, these are very compelling differences.

Thought you should know,
Jason

Subject: Fw: Fwd: Qualifications of Clinton and Obama Let's take a closer look at who's really qualified and or who's really working for the good of all of us in the Senate. Obama or Clinton.

Records of these two candidates should be scrutinized in order to make an informed decision.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term - 6yrs. - and another year campaigning, has managed to author and pass into law - 20 - twenty pieces of legislation in her first six years.

These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress http://www.thomas.loc.gov/, but to save you trouble, I'll post them here for you.> 1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.> 2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.> 3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.> 4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.> 5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.> 6. Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.> 7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.> 8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.> 9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.> 10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.> 11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.> 12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.> 13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.> 14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.> 15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty. Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive. 16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.> 17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11 18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.> 19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.> 20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

There you have it, the fact's straight from the Senate Record. Now, I would post those of Obama's, but the list is too substantive, so I'll mainly categorize.

> During the first - 8 - eight years of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced> 233 regarding healthcare reform,> 125 on poverty and public assistance,> 112 crime fighting bills,> 97 economic bills,> 60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,> 21 ethics reform bills,> 15 gun control,> 6 veterans affairs and many others.> > His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law, **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law, **The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate, **The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became law, **The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee, and many more.> > In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. > An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no record according to some who would prefer that this comparison not be made public.> He's not just a talker.> He's a doer.> > Pass it on....It's impressive>

If they can, why can't we....?

Micrbro, I'm not good at blogs (a number of my friends have them, but I always forget to check them and add to them)...but you might want to include this video. A friend just sent it, and it relates to our discussions recently! Perhaps it's Hillary, Barrak and John reincarnated? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuuesBhOR9g
This is a video of a homeless man in Santa Barbara and his pets. They work State Street every week for donations. The animals are pretty well fed and seem to be happy. They are a family. The man who owns them rigged a harness up for his cat so she wouldn't have to walk so much (like the dog and himself). At some juncture the rat came along, and since no one wanted to eat anyone else, the rat started riding with the cat and often, on the cat. The dog will stand all day and let you talk to him and admire him for a few chin scratches. The mayor of Santa Barbara filmed this clip and sent it out as a Christmas card.

What side of history will you be on?

Barb,

You cited an interesting experience you had in a class that you took and you raised the question, suppose we were blind?

Well, my father had been blind for over fifteen years. He was also the pastor of our church. My father was a great man and had the personality to match. Everyone who met him, loved him.

As a kid, I was shy and didn't have the confidence to interact with strangers. The first time I had any meaningful interaction with white people was in the Marine Corps. So, as a young man, I studied how my father interacted with people, especially, complete strangers because he was a genius at that. I think as he began to lose his sight, he developed and trusted his other senses which relieved him of drawing visual conclusions.

This ability allowed him to construct an opinion about people based, primarily, on what they said and the intonation of their voices. Thereby, breaking down all the barriers that us "able" people maintain when interacting with others. Perhaps, the male humans are more guilty of judging people based on appearance than females because it has been proven that we are more visual. Think about it, how often will you see a man who is dating a woman who's, let's say, physical beauty is not her strength. On the other hand, more often, you may see an attractive woman with a man and wonder, how did he get her?

If the visual factor was taken out of the social equation, perhaps human relationships would be much more meaningful. I think scientist put their finger on it when they try a theory under a "blind test" or when a philharmonic hold trials for a cellist with the judges and cellist separated, unable to see one another....all that can be heard is the beauty of the instrument.

If we read the text of Hillary's and Barack's speeches without the knowledge of knowing who they are, I believe Democrats could go with either candidate. It's only when race and gender comes into play that we have issues. To prove my point, take this very simple questionnaire Ayana Douglas sent to me.

After espousing all of this rhetoric, it begs the question, "why am I supporting Barack Obama and not Hillary Clinton?" It's simple: he is black and is equal, if not better, to all of his competitors. It gives me great pride to see my "brother" compete on this level and to be, in the first time of this country's history, seriously considered as our next president. His candidacy has done so much for my community. When I walk down the street I see people beaming with this unspoken pride. Regardless of my personal problems, I feel revitalized. I feel hopeful because of this man's candidacy. I imagine this euphoria in the black community is similar to the euphoria felt after Joe Louis' victory over Hitler's Max Schmeling.

My other affinity for Barack is his ability to move me. My history is steeped in great orators: coaches, teachers, politicians to preachers. In the black community, rapping/speaking is an art form. Our successful speakers have always been charismatic, too and that's a formidable combination. Black churches fill up every Sunday to hear the "word". When I hear Barack speak I can hear the "word", not necessarily the apostolic word, but the spiritual word. When a speaker has your ear you are more susceptible to reasoning all that the speaker has to say. Public speaking is an art form. I'm sorry to say, but there is no one else on the Democratic ticket that affects me that way. However, on the Republican side, I find Mike Huckabee attractive.....when he speaks, I listen. Because I listen I do not agree with his positions. But, I'm open to hearing what the governor has to say. He, too, comes from that tradition. I struggle to listen (and stay awake) to other candidates only because I know I need to hear what everyone has to say.

Barb, try the "microbrother test": close your eyes and listen to Barack, Mario Cuomo or Barbara Jordan speak and let me know how you feel.

Microbrother....I love the dialogue you've got going। Music is a good analogy...sometimes life is jazz and sometimes it's rock and roll....sometimes it's a symphony। I like that. Identity goes in many directions--how society views us and identifies with us, how we view other individuals, and how we view ourselves. Unless we're blind, it's probably unrealistic to think we're not affected by the way we look--our being. In a positive way, it's what makes each of us unique and special....(I'm not talking about the way we look at others, now, it's how we look at ourselves. Are we (and Obama and Hillary and McCain) comfortable in our own skins, as you say? I went to a great workshop with the deaf many years ago. The facilitator had us write down the 3 things that define us. We were all women, so that narrowed it down. The facilitator was gay, deaf, professor in that order. Another woman was black, woman, mother.....At that time in my life I was mother, woman, wife....yet only a year or two earlier (before kids) as I completed my studies & became a "professional," I would have been teacher, wife, woman. However, interestingly, the white women never included white....the black women almost always did....the gay women always did, the deaf did. Hardly anyone wrote woman first, but many included it somewhere. I'm almost certain men would not define themselves as men first (or would they even include it???). We even categorize and pigeonhole ourselves, don't we, if it adds to our Identity. And that's not a bad thing...Identity is a GOOD thing (from the inside out). It's only when people try to pigeonhole us that it's a problem....discrimination...and unfortunately, it does happen a lot. If we were all blind, I wonder if others would truly "see" us for what we are...see our souls, our personalities, our essence?? Or do blind people discriminate as well....interesting thought!

June,

Perhaps it still begs the question w/ regards to Obama's identity and how he views himself. However, in my experience, I understand that society will attempt to define you, regardless of how you see yourself and I'm at peace with that.

Let's face it, it's a hell of a lot easier to categorize/pigeon hole people to four or five categories than to come up with a zillion variations of us all. You see this struggle in almost everything e.g. "it's not jazz and it's not quite rock-n-roll....let's call it world music.....honestly, I just don't know what to call it". The European mind-set always needed to be able to maintain logical order/categorization. But, on the real side, we are just one big "masala" or mixture of so many biological and social experiences.

I predict, if mankind survives it's self-destructive nature, it will become physically homogenous and this argument of race will someday be tantamount to the ancient question, "is the world flat or round?"

I'm certain that Obama, as the next President of the United States, is comfortable in his own skin because in order to confront the stuff that's going to be coming his way, he has to be!

I would be interested in other views on this age-old issue, too.

Pastor Toni,

Race has always been an issues as far back when people noticed differentiation with others. Europeans skillfully exploited this phenomenon in their effort to colonize the world.

Today, we can clearly see the effects of the British tactic of "divide and conquer" in India, where the caste system was exploited to control the country. Typically, the darker skinned Indians were subjugated to menial jobs and were not afforded the opportunities of the lighter-skinned Indians. The more British you looked and acted, the better your chances were to succeed under the British empire. As an attorney and a member of the Indian upper class, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi broke ranks with the status quo and sought to lift up all Indians by humbling himself to the level of the dark-skinned untouchables. His movement was successful and it won India's independence from Great Britain, but the "head trip" or the mind-set created by the British still exists, today.

On the shores of this country, slave impresario Willie Lynch, in 1712 published a handbook for slave owners with instructions on how to control slaves: among other means, making one better than the other. Most recently, we had black social clubs that excluded other blacks who did not past the brown paper bag test. This test excluded blacks folks who wanted membership because their complexion was too dark.

I know, this is year 2008, why are we still thinking like this? What the European did to us and what we continue to do to ourselves is, perhaps, the most awesome mind manipulation known to man.

As I travel throughout the world, I see how the Indian case-study was duplicated and used. It never ceases to amaze me to see in multi-ethnic countries, it is always the darker-skinned people who are at the bottom of the socio-economic totem pole.

As you may remember, I joined the All African Peoples Revolutionary Party when I was in college. That experience forced me to look at some of these issues. Believe me, it got real personal. We examined the whole notion of beauty....what is beautiful? We began to look at beauty from an African perspective and it opened a whole new world. I saw a rainbow of beauty. When I met Alfreda, I thought she was the most beautiful woman there was! Everyone thought she was from Africa.

All we have to do is look at pop-culture, the media. Who is betrayed as beautiful? Who is portrayed as successful? Who is portrayed as acceptable? Fortunately, today, I see value in everyone, but it was a developmental process because I was programmed, too. Everyone is not/can not go through the reeducation process, needed. First, I saw beauty. Then, I saw soul. Until then, race will always be an issue with people, especially, when power and money is the end game.

Oh I am proud of him as well Big Brother. I am having issues with the bigger discussion on Obama as to what race or who if he is white or black or even African American or African European- he is a man of color and I believe character. Truly he has had struggles that we dont know because his back groundlets talk truth- we are all mix with some other race but our experiences as we walk the streets, go into our work places, go into eating galleries, or even purchasing items we are see and are related to as black men and women and not after all our education, accomplishments, etc. - we are still seen as black. So, the questioning of these issues is only a distraction and for our own to engage these discussion is for what purpose? But it only takes away from the people of color and regressing back to the light skin / dark skin division. Thanks.

My sister, Pastor Toni,

I'm sorry that you disagree, but this is a discussion about the future of all of us. As much as I love my family, I would never discuss anything personal about family members that would harm them. However, we are talking about the potential outcome of something important that may be greater than us, individually.

We should want to share our thoughts to help develop one's thinking and not be closed to new ideas and opinions. That's what this whole political process is about. We could choose to only speak to those who look like us or think like us or have the same blood. But, I believe this would only stifle personal development.

I guess I'm just at an age, now, when self-expression and the truth can't hurt anymore.

your brother,
microbro

p.s. I'm proud of that old runaway slave, Henry Smith!

Hey June,

Good to hear from you.

Yes, I'm well aware of his ancestry. When I wrote, I was writing, figuratively. I believe Obama is more acutely aware of our experience than other candidates. If he's lacking any awareness, I'm sure the streets and Michelle have enlightened him.

Look, let's face it, for any person of color to garner enough support to become president, that person has to have the support of the majority. A successful candidate can neither be too conservative nor too radical. Yes, Obama has white blood as well as black blood and his views are somewhat centrist. He is intelligent, elegant and well spoken. He has captured the imagination of the whole world and is galvanizing folks of all stripes in this country in historical proportions! I can't think of better ingredients for success.

With reference to mental health treatment in our community, I do know that is a hot-button issue, as is AIDS, employment, drugs and all of the other social ills of our community. I don't expect this candidate to have the answers for everything, but I do expect that those learned people in our community be prepared to work with the candidate to address these issues. I encourage anyone who may have concerns with any positions of the Obama Campaign to, please, go to his site or get in contact with a campaign official and get clarity.

I believe an Obama might not have worked twenty years ago. And by the same token, an Obama might not work twenty years from now. But, I do believe Barack Obama is the right person today.

It's good to have you onboard, June.......welcome.

Hey microbrother,

Great writing! Wonderful ideas - but Barack - and, you may wish to debate me on this - is not a descendant from Henry nor is he in the true sense of the word even an African-American. Rather, he is an African-European, his mother being European and his father being African. He didn't experience what our ancestors experienced in this country so I don't think we can included him in that mix. (Nor does he align himself that way.) On another note, he is likeable (I even voted for him in the Florida election when my candidate of choice, Ron Paul, did not appear to be garnering enough votes to be a "real" possibility) - though some say that his (Baracks) platform is not that much different from Hillary's.
The one thing I don't like about Barack is that he beleives that we don't have enough mental health institutions in the U.S., and, if you have been keeping up with the mental health field, you know that more of our children are being prescribed drugs - from Ritalin to Prozac - than ever before! And and who's benefitting, the pharmaceutical cos. that's who. Barack needs to be enlightened in this respect!
Thought I should share this w/ you.
All the best,
June

Family,

This Tuesday, we will have one of the greatest opportunities in our lifetime to impact the future of the world for generations to come, to vote Senator Barack Obama as the Democratic presidential nominee of the United States of America.

Yes, this Tuesday, we can add our voice to the billions of people on this planet who know that a change is needed in America. For others in the world may know, perhaps better than we, that if change does not come soon enough, political strife or nuclear/environmental Armageddon is inevitable.

I believe out of each generation comes individuals that capture the imagination of us all and have the ability to do something great. I believe that Barack Obama is such a person. He has an unique perspective on the domestic/international stage because he is that candidate who was nurtured in the womb of our history and birthed through the loins of our struggle.

It is this young mans face that the world needs to see to prove, in spite of the historical injustices heaped upon his people, we can still rise to lead this country. To represent all the good that America can do for mankind. It is this young mans voice that the world needs to hear, to assure it that we are truly brothers and sisters who need to help one another and cease the need to perpetuate self-interest aggression. It is this young mans stature that we need to uphold to represents the best of the best.

Family, at this time, I think of those recent great spirits that have gone on before us, like Fannie Lou Hamer, at her own peril, spoke truth to power about the right to vote. I think of Shirley Chisholm, who placed the seed in our mind that it is possible to be president. I think about all of those folks that fought, kicked and pushed for this day to come. I think about those in our history that made the ultimate sacrifice to make February 12, 2008, possible.

Let us make that old runaway slave, Henry Smith, proud! Get out there and vote Senator Barack Obama as the Democratic presidential nominee for President of the United States! And in doing so, we must remember that the struggle does not end there. We must continue to push for the ideals that will make this world a better place for us all. Thank you.

Your humble family servant,
